6 Tips for a Successful Job Interview

A job interview is a stressful situation for most people. Having a successful job interview is the common goal.  However, there is always the anticipation in one’s mind about what questions will be asked, who the interviewer will be, and if he/she will like me.  Here are 6 tips for a successful job interview, inspired by Alison Doyle.

Tip 1:  Prepare and practice for a successful job interview

Practice your answers on the typical job interview questions employers ask.  While in the interview, listen carefully to the questions to ensure your responses give the interviewer the information they are looking for.

Also, have a list of your own questions ready. It is important to have at least one or two questions prepared. In this way, you demonstrate your interest in the organization. Otherwise, you might come across as apathetic.

Tip 2:  Develop a connection with the interviewer

Know the interviewer’s name and use it during the interview.  Making a personal connection with your interviewer can increase your chances of being appointed.  Managers tend to hire candidates they like and who seems a good fit for the culture of the company.

Tip 3:  Research the company, and show what you know

Research the employer and the industry and try to demonstrate what you know in your answers.  The company website and social media accounts are good places to start.

Tip 4: Get ready well in advance

This is especially important in the new landscape of virtual interviews. Ensure that all the technology is set up and ready well before the time.  Do a trial run to make sure everything is working properly.

For a physical interview, get your outfit ready the night before and allow for ample traveling time.

Tip 5: Try to stay calm and maintain eye contact

During the interview, try to stay as calm as possible. Take a few slow, deep breaths just before you go in. Be aware of your body language – show confidence by maintaining eye contact with the interviewer.

Tip 6:  Follow-up after the interview

Send a thank you note, reiterating your interest in the position, within 24 hours after the interview, to each of the interviewers personally.

No matter how many interviews you’ve had, it doesn’t get easier. Following these tips will ensure you have a successful job interview, and it will increase your chances of getting hired.
